The Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has today, laid the foundation for the first Halfway House to be established in the Maldives, in Hulhumale’.
Speaking at the ceremony held at the site allocated for the Halfway House, Dr. Waheed highlighted that this Halfway House was one of the projects undertaken by the government in its efforts against illegal drugs. He also noted the establishment of the Women’s Rehabilitation Centre in Villimale’ recently, as part of the activities to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
In his speech, the Vice President noted the challenges faced by youth when released back into the society after completing their rehabilitation programme, and underscored the importance of a Halfway House, which will allow people to begin the process of reintegration with the community.
Vice President expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Health and Family for their work in the establishment of the Halfway House, and Caritas Italiana for providing the funding for a much needed cause.
Stating his hopes for the further strengthening and expansion of the government’s efforts in preventing narcotics and drug trafficking, he revealed plans for the establishment of a Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Fuvammulah in the near future. The Vice President also added that the government has made significant progress towards its goal in preventing illegal drug trafficking.
At the ceremony, the Vice President planted a tree at the Halfway House site.
