President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that sustainable and meaningful reform requires integrity and honest discourse grounded in the realities of the issues at hand.
The President made the remarks while speaking on Nation Chat, a podcast series produced by Public Service Media (PSM). In the latest episode, aired by PSM News tonight, the President provided detailed insights into a range of ongoing national issues.
In this regard, the President said efforts are underway to strengthen the economy, including the implementation of distinct measures related to US dollars and the systematic implementation of legal provisions that had previously been enacted but remained unimplemented.
He said every step taken by the Government and every legislative reform introduced was based on facts and informed by extensive consultations and technical studies conducted by teams of academics and experienced professionals over a considerable period. He added that decisions were ultimately made based on sound principles.
The President reaffirmed that the Government’s objective is to expand the economy and stressed that no action would be taken that could hinder economic progress. He expressed confidence that the measures being implemented to address foreign exchange challenges would deliver the desired results and improve the overall situation, despite political criticism of some of the measures.
During tonight’s podcast, President Dr Muizzu also provided an update on the Thilamalé Bridge project. Addressing concerns over the quality of the bridge, he said the project was being overseen by internationally renowned firm AECOM, which also oversaw the construction of the Sinamalé Bridge. With Malé and Vilimalé now connected, the President said the entire bridge project, extending to Thilafushi, is expected to be completed and opened to the public within a year.
The President also highlighted the Government’s focus on training Maldivians in engineering and science. He noted that while many students pursue fields such as business and law, the country also needs civil, electronic and mechanical engineers to support national development.
President Dr Muizzu detailed the Government’s approach to economic and infrastructure development, encompassing key reforms and major projects such as the Thilamalé Bridge, describing it as part of the Administration’s vision to establish a strong and sustainable foundation for the country’s future. He emphasised that strengthening Maldivian expertise in critical fields, particularly engineering, is essential to advancing this vision and supporting the country’s long-term development.
