President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has urged cooperation from local councils and institutions in serving the public, emphasising that political ideologies should not obstruct progress.
He made the statement addressing the community of B. Dharavandhoo, during his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands of South Maalhosmadulu Atoll.
The President reminded that when political interests take precedence over community welfare, it is ultimately the community that bears the consequences. He, however, assured that in fulfilling his duties, he will take steps to prevent such outcomes and expressed his commitment to shaping governance to ensure the delivery of comprehensive services.
Speaking in this regard, the President underscored attempts to misrepresent the rationale behind the amendments to the Decentralisation Act, citing specific examples and providing explanations. He emphasised that local governance should serve to empower the community and noted that the amendments endorsed by Parliament embody this principle. He added that an empowered community will, in turn, empower local governance.
Observing that the majority of local councils conduct their duties with integrity, the President emphasised that accountable councils are instrumental in the realisation of pledges. He further asserted that in the realm of public service, every moment holds significance, and he will not permit differences of opinion to obstruct service provision. He said that the aim is to implement, accountable, transparent and professional good governance.
Reiterating that his Administration prioritises citizens, the President highlighted developmental projects earmarked for the Dharavandhoo community over the next year and a half. He stated that the completion of the project to construct eight classrooms, office premises, and a multipurpose hall at Baa Atoll School will elevate the island’s education sector to new heights.
The President also assured significant upgrades to the health sector and highlighted promising projects in sports and recreation. He further confirmed that road and harbour development works are planned, and pledged additional benefits to the island through tourism initiatives.
Noting that Dharavandhoo Airport is one of the most successful regional airports, he announced his intention to undertake its upgradation, assigning the task to Island Aviation Services through the requisite legal procedures.
He concluded his remarks by emphasising that responsible public service requires setting aside political differences, treating all citizens as equals, and providing cooperation in a professional and accountable manner.
