President Mohamed Nasheed has this afternoon met with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission in the Maldives to review the IMF programme to assist economic recovery programme.

At the meeting held at the President’s Office, in depth discussions were held on the IMF programme in the Maldives.

Speaking at the meeting, members of the IMF mission praised the government’s fiscal and monetary policies. They highlighted the importance of measures taken by the government during the past year to reduce the budget deficit. Members of the mission hailed the government’s efforts to bring the budget deficit under control without printing extra money as a “huge achievement”.

Members of the mission said the Taxation Bill proposed by the government to the People’s Majilis was an important step to complement the government’s policies to increase the revenue and strengthen the economy.

At the meeting, President Nasheed thanked the IMF for its continued support for the Maldives’ economic recovery.

IMF Excutive Board approved loan assistance of US$92.5 million on 4 December 2009 to assist the economic recovery programme. Aim of this programme is to ensure the macro economic stability of the Maldives.
