President of Timor-Leste, Dr José Ramos-Horta has concluded his State visit to the Maldives, tonight. President Dr Ramos-Horta arrived in the Maldives at the invitation of President Mohamed Nasheed.

Before departure, President Nasheed and President Dr Ramos-Horta issued a joint press statement at the Male’ International Airport.

The statement said, during the visit by President Dr Ramos-Horta to the Maldives, “Two leaders discussed at length the vibrant relations between the two countries and exchanged their views on regional and global issues of interest for both countries.”

During the visit, both leaders reviewed the challenges of climate change, sustainable development and poverty eradication faced by least developed countries, especially small island states.

The statement issued by President Nasheed and President Dr Ramos-Horta state that “two leaders acknowledged that Copenhagen Accord is an important step forward to address the challenges of Climate Change and called upon Asian countries to speed up their process to associate themselves with the accord.”

Joint press statement issued by two leaders urged Asian leaders to take the lead on finding innovative and pragmatic solutions to complement the operationalization of Copenhagen Accord “in such a way that it can contribute to the attainment of sustainable development and poverty eradication in the Asian region.”

During the visit Foreign Ministers of two countries signed agreements of education, culture, tourism and visa arrangements to enhance closer cooperation between two countries.

Speaking to the press at Male’ International Airport, before departure President Nasheed and President Dr Ramos-Horta said the visit by President Dr Ramos-Horta was a good beginning to strengthen the bilateral relations and has opened up new avenues of cooperation between the two countries.

President Ramos-Horta thanked President Nasheed and the government for the warm hospitality and welcome accorded to him and his delegation.

Before departure, President Nasheed presented a commemorative photo album of President Dr Ramos-Horta’s visit to the Maldives, to the President of Timor-Leste.
