President Mohamed Nasheed has today hosted a luncheon in honour of the visiting President of Timor-Leste, Dr Jose Ramos-Horta.
Speaking at the luncheon, President Nasheed said that the Maldives was willing to learn from the experience of Timor-Leste in its struggle for freedom and democracy.
Highlighting the commonalities shared between the Maldives and Timor-Leste, the President said both countries had come against the odds in introducing democratic forms of government.
President Nasheed said the visit by President Ramos-Horta was a good beginning for both countries to strengthen the bilateral relations.
Speaking at the luncheon, President Ramos-Hota highlighted President Nasheed’s vision and leadership in consolidating peace and democracy in the Maldives, and leading the world on climate change and sustainable development.
He also spoke on the challenges faced by Timor-Leste since its independence 8 years ago.
President Ramos-Horta thanked President Nasheed for the warm hospitality and welcome accorded to him and his delegation.
