The cabinet has recommended for the Maldives to sign two maritime conventions and one maritime protocol: the International Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation 1988 (SUA Convention); Protocol for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Fixed Platforms located on the Continental Shelf 1988 (SUA Protocol 88); and the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue 1979 (SAR Convention).

At the meeting, members of the cabinet noted that being party to the conventions would assist in better enforcement of international and local maritime law in the Maldives. They also pointed out that the conventions would facilitate in aiding those in distress at sea and help minimise environmental pollution that may arise from incidents at sea.
