President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said the Bank of Maldives Plc (BML) would not face any political influence, in its operation, by the government. He made the statement while speaking at the function to mark the 30th anniversary of BML. The function was held this evening at Dharubaaruge.
Continuing in this regard, President stressed that it was imperative that the national bank has the confidence of all citizens. He said in the past few years, BML had suffered big losses because of a few people who had taken loans from the bank and not repaid the loans. He added that the reason for this was undue political influence into a professional institution.
Emphasizing the contribution of BML to the country’s economy, the President expressed confidence in the bank’s future growth.
He noted the role of the bank’s staff in its advancement in the past 30 years. He further thanked the members of the BML Board of Directors for their efforts to overcome the challenges the bank had to face in the recent years and turn it into a profitable bank.
At the function, the President was presented a commemorative plaque by MBL. The plaque was presented by the Chairman of its Board of Directors Dr Abdulla Shiham Hassan.
Employees who have worked at the bank for 15 years, 20 years, 25 years and 30 years were presented with awards. President Waheed presented awards to employees who had served the bank for 30 years. President also inaugurated new awards introduced for the bank’s employees, as well as a new corporate social responsibility programme of the bank.
