President Dr Mohamed Waheed has congratulated the President Dr Mahmoud Abbas, and the people of the State of Palestine, following the United Nations General Assembly’s decision to grant Non-Member Observer State status to Palestine.
In a letter sent to President Abbas, President Waheed had expressed his confidence that this decision would play a catalytic role in Palestine achieving its full membership of the United Nations as an independent State.
President Waheed had noted that the Maldives cosponsored and supported the General Assembly Resolution because “we believe that the Palestinians have an inalienable right to an independent State with East Jerusalem as its capital”.
“Above all, the Maldives believes that colonialism and military occupation should have no place in international politics of twenty-first century, and that it is a moral obligation for every civilized country to stand up and support Palestinians’ quest for justice and dignity”.
