The Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Mr Yang Jiechi, made a courtesy call on President Mohamed Nasheed today, during an official visit to the Maldives.

In the meeting, held at the President’s Office, Minister Jiechi and the President discussed a range of issues of mutual interest, including climate change, tourism, fisheries, health, trade and investment.

President Nasheed told Mr Jiechi that the Maldives was looking for Chinese investments in the fisheries sector, especially in reef fishery and aqua-culture.

Foreign Minister said Chinese government encourages Chinese companies to invest in the Maldives.

President Nasheed stressed on the importance of China’s positive role in tackling climate change and reaching a legally binding treaty in Mexico later this year.

Mr Jiechi assured that China would honour the commitments it made in Copenhagen and said China would fully cooperate with the Maldives to have a viable climate agreement.
