President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that new technology should be introduced in the Maldives to ensure more produce, and that it should be taught in schools. The President made this remark while speaking at the official Farmers Day function held in Funadhoo of Shaviyani Atoll.
In his speech, the President said that every nation works to ensure food security for the people, and that we should try as much as possible, to produce what could be grown in the country. Highlighting the problems being faced in importing goods to the Maldives, the President spoke of the importance of having a national policy to establish a shipping line to important food items.
In his speech, the President also spoke on the importance of providing our children with a nutritious diet. The President further expressed his gratitude to the farmers in the country, saying that today was a day to celebrate their hard work. He said that it was not only an achievement for farmers and their families, but also an important contribution to the country’s economy. Noting the high number of women active in the sector, the President said that it was part of women’s development as well.
The President and the First Lady attended the Farmers Day Exhibition this evening, and observed various activities and competitions.
