Regional Director for South Asia, of the United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Ms Karin Hulshof has paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Waheed.
At the meeting held at the President’s Office today, discussions were held on ways to increase cooperation between the Maldives and UNICEF. Discussions were also held on the measures that could be taken to overcome the social challenges being faced in the country.
President Waheed briefed the Regional Director on the steps being taken by the government in achieving the millennium goals for the country, especially those works being carried out in the education and health sectors.
Speaking at the meeting, Regional Director Ms Karin Hulshof acknowledged the government’s commitment to enhancing the education system of the Maldives, and emphasised the importance of carrying out drug awareness programmes for the younger generation, through the school system.
