President Dr Mohamed Waheed has sent a message of sympathy to President of the Republic of India, Pratibha Patil, following the loss of life caused by a road accident on Mumbai-Pune road in Maharashtra.
The President’s message to the Indian President reads as follows.

It was with intense sadness that I learned about the death of at least 26 people together with some children when a speeding van crashed into an immobile bus on Mumbai-Pune road in Maharashtra.
At this most difficult hour of national grief, the Government and citizens of Maldives join me in extending our deepest sympathy to you, the Government and the people of India.
Please convey our heartfelt commiseration to the injured victims and the bereaved families.
