President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the impeccable preparations for the SAARC Summit show that the patriotic citizens of Addu City are capable of representing the whole country.

The President made this remark while speaking on the final preparations currently underway in Addu City for the SAARC Summit, in his weekly radio address delivered this morning. The President also expressed his gratitude to the people of Addu City, Maldives National Defence Force and Maldives Police Service for their cooperative work.

President Nasheed highlighted the establishment of the first airport in the island of Fuvahmulah last week. He said that this airport is a symbol of national service, determination, strength and high national spirits of the people of Fuvahmulah.

In his radio address, the President also underlined the success of the Second Chance programme initiated by the government, which is a rehabilitation and reintegration programme for youth undergoing criminal prosecution. Noting that 330 offenders have already been released under the reintegration programme, President Nasheed said that 149 people released were currently successfully employed, and that 13 were taking part in various skill development programmes under “Hunaru”.

The President also spoke on the significance of performing the Hajj Pilgrimage, highlighting this year’s Hajj Day which will be marked tomorrow, 5 November.
