President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the role of an independent and just judiciary is important to establish the process of a stable democratization. The President made this statement during the meeting with the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay.
At the meeting, talks were mainly focused on how the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights can be engaged in the Maldives and help in the democratization process.
Speaking at the meeting, President Nasheed highlighted a high profile case of Mr. Ahmed Shafeeq which is being prosecuted by the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and discussed with the High Commissioner on the need for an independent and just judiciary.
The High Commissioner thanked the President and the Maldives government for taking a leadership role within the Human Rights Council to bring human rights issues to the forefront of political debate.
