Members of the cabinet have today deliberated on measures to be taken to prevent such unfortunate events as the fatal drowning of four students and the Principal of Hiriyaa School, last Friday in Huraa of Kaafu atoll. Discussions were held on the emergency preparedness and responsiveness required at the time of a crisis, and the necessity for the full cooperation from all concerned agencies.

At the meeting held this afternoon, the cabinet appointed a committee to determine the safety measures to be taken in preparation for emergencies. The Chairman of this committee is Minister of Defence and National Security Thalhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu. Other members of the committee are Minister of Home Affairs Hassan Afeef, Minister of Transport and Communication Mohamed Adil Saleem, Minister of Housing and Environment Mohamed Aslam, Minister of Education Shifa Mohamed and Minister of Health and Family Dr Aminath Jameel.

At today’s cabinet meeting, members also decided to participate in the “Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage”.

The purposes of this convention are to safeguard the intangible cultural heritage; to ensure respect for the intangible cultural heritage of the communities, groups and individuals concerned; to raise awareness at the local, national and international levels of importance of the intangible cultural heritage, and of ensuring mutual appreciation thereof; and to provide for international cooperation and assistance.
