President Mohamed Nasheed has today met with the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons, Dr Chaloka Beyani.
At the meeting held at the President’s Office this morning, President Nasheed emphasized on the housing needs of the people, due to natural disasters caused by climate change. He briefed on the government’s efforts in catering to the needs of the people who lost their homes in the 2004 tsunami.
Noting that major soil erosion was being faced in a lot of islands, the President stated that the number of islanders migrating to Male’ still has not ceased. Speaking in this regard, the President stressed on the need for a proper housing infrastructure in Male’. He also shared the state’s efforts on becoming an exemplary nation of a low carbon development, in relation to the government’s commitment to the carbon neutrality goal.
At the meeting, Dr. Beyani noted that the Maldives was the first country to raise the issue of climate change at the Human Rights Consul. He also highlighted on the importance of a legal framework, in relation to policy of national disaster.
