President Mohamed Nasheed has met with the members of Board of Governors of International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), presently in the Maldives to attend the 91st Majlis meeting of the Board of Governors.
The President noted that a number of Maldivians have graduated from IIUM while many more were studying at the university.
He said, since its establishment in 1983, IIUM continued to benefit the region as well as the global Muslim community.
Underlining the recent enactment of the Maldivian National University in February this year, the President said the government wanted to see a better engagement with IIUM to strengthen the first university in the Maldives.
The President and the IIUM Board of Governors exchanged views on ways to enhance collaboration between the Maldives and IIUM to strengthen higher education sector, especially the Maldivian National University.
At the meeting, IIUM Governing board members noted that the Maldives was at the forefront in extending its support to establish IIUM, and expressed their appreciation for the Maldives government’s continued engagement with IIUM.
International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), established in 1983, is sponsored by eight different governments from the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) including Malaysia and the Maldives.
The University operates under the direction of a Board of Governors with representatives of the OIC as well as eight sponsoring countries.
Representative of the Maldives, High Commissioner of the Maldives in Malaysia, Mohamed Zaki also attended the meeting today.
The meeting held at the President’s Office was attended by Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed, National Security Advisor Ameen Faisal, Advisor on Political Affairs Mohamed Shihab and Foreign Policy Advisor Dr Ahmed Shaheed.
