President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the China-Maldives Everlasting Friendship Park today to commemorate the anniversary of the inauguration of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge and National Engineers’ Day, which is observed in the Maldives today.
His Excellency Kong Xianhua, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Maldives, Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam, and Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr Abdulla Muththalib also attended the event.
During the visit, the President expressed his gratitude to the Chinese Ambassador for the continued assistance extended to the Maldives by the Government of China. The Ambassador affirmed that the Chinese Government would continue to uphold the principle of mutual benefit and provide steadfast support for the development of the Maldives. The President also toured the park and posed for a group photograph.
Last year, the President designated 30 August as National Engineers’ Day, to be observed annually. The date was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the inauguration of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, the largest infrastructure project undertaken in the nation’s history. He also announced that, beginning this year, the Government would introduce a National Engineers’ Award in recognition of the invaluable contributions made by engineers to national development.
The China-Maldives Friendship Bridge project was undertaken under the direct oversight of President Dr Muizzu during his tenure as Minister of Housing and Infrastructure. During his tenure, a significant number of major infrastructure projects were successfully implemented across the country. The President holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil Engineering.
On the occasion of the eighth anniversary of the inauguration of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, the President stated in a post on his official X account that the bridge was opened as a powerful symbol of the enduring friendship between the Maldives and China, connecting the capital, Malé, with the airport and Hulhumalé. He noted that the bridge represents more than infrastructure, embodying the trust, solidarity and shared aspirations that bind the Maldives and China.
The President further stated that, under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, the partnership between the Maldives and China continues to grow from strength to strength, creating new opportunities for the people and opening new horizons for a shared future. He reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to nurturing this enduring friendship and building an even stronger partnership with China.
