President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Uza Aishath Azima Shakoor as Principal Secretary to the President for National Territory and Sovereignty at the President’s Office, with ministerial rank.
Uza Aishath Azima Shakoor is an experienced professional who has held several senior positions in the Government and State. She was the Maldives’ first female Attorney General and has served in the Cabinet during three presidential terms. Her career also includes serving as a Member of Parliament and the Constitutional Assembly as a presidential appointee member in the Majlis that drafted the current Constitution.
She holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of London and a Master of Laws from the University of Western Australia. With more than 30 years of experience in the legal field, she has made significant contributions to governance, constitutional and legislative reform, and legal research. She also played a key role in drafting and implementing the Government’s reform agenda introduced in 2004.
Uza Aishath Azima Shakoor is a co-founder of ‘Hope for Women’, an NGO dedicated to promoting women’s rights, and ‘Faalan’, an organisation focused on the rights of persons with disabilities. Through her private legal practice, she has also provided pro bono legal assistance to victims of sexual and domestic violence.
