President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the 20th Amendment to the Export-Import Act of the Maldives (Act No. 31/79).
The Amendment was passed by the People's Majlis at the ninth sitting of its second session of 2026, held on Wednesday, 1 July 2026.
Under the new revisions, the specific import duty for cigarettes, beedis, and consumables for heated tobacco products has been set at MVR 4 per stick and an ad valorem duty rate of 30 per cent.
Additionally, the Amendment stipulates that nicotine gum, nicotine patches, and other products specifically manufactured to aid smoking cessation are entirely exempt from import duties.
The Amendment has come into effect following its ratification and publication in the Government Gazette.
