His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for stronger collective action to address drug abuse and illicit trafficking, describing the issue as a social, economic, moral, and national security challenge that affects the very fabric of society.
In a message issued on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the President noted that the Maldives joins the global community in observing this year's theme, "World drug problem: persisting issues, new challenges, innovative responses." He underscored that addressing it remains essential to safeguarding the nation's future and protecting its youth.
The President highlighted ongoing efforts to expand treatment and rehabilitation services, including the planned opening of three new full-service rehabilitation centres later this year.
He further stated that recent legislative reforms have strengthened the national response to drug-related crimes through enhanced inter-agency coordination, improved procedural clarity, and measures aimed at disrupting trafficking networks and holding perpetrators accountable.
The President also reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to regional and global partnerships to address emerging threats, including new psychoactive substances and evolving trafficking patterns.
The President concluded by calling on families, communities, civil society organisations, and the private sector to work together in building a drug-free Maldives. He expressed confidence that, through understanding, compassion, and opportunity, communities can empower individuals to make healthy choices and build a stronger, more resilient nation.
