First Lady Sajidha Mohamed graced the International Nurses Day 2026 Debate this evening, organised by Community Nurse Volunteers and the Maldives Oncology Nurse Association to mark International Nurses Day.
The debate was held at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) of the Maldives National University (MNU), where the First Lady was welcomed by the President of Community Nurse Volunteers, Mariyam Niyan, and the President of the Maldives Oncology Nurse Association, Aminath Zeeniya.
The motion for the debate was: "The nursing field in the Maldives offers sufficient opportunities for advancement." Two teams took part, with Team A speaking in favour of the motion and Team B speaking against.
The session offered a broad exploration of career progression in nursing in the Maldives, alongside ways to expand the field and create new opportunities within it. It brought together practitioners and academics from the sector, and was attended by a large audience of nursing professionals.
International Nurses Day is observed annually on 12 May.
