The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Dr Mohamed Muizzu, has stated that the freedom the Maldives enjoys today was won through the courage and sacrifice of its soldiers, and that every patriot must hold them in the highest regard.
The President made the remarks this evening at the official ceremony held at Kalhuthuh'kalaa Koshi to mark the 134th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). He was accompanied by the First Lady, Sajidha Mohamed.
In his address, the President said that the soldiers of the Maldives safeguard the nation's independence and sovereign red lines through arduous service, placing country above self, and that the progression of every member of the armed forces is equally vital. He went on to share several plans the Government will undertake for the welfare and advancement of Maldivian soldiers.
Noting that housing is a fundamental right of every Maldivian citizen, the President affirmed that this right must be fully realised for soldiers as well, and gave the assurance that the number of soldiers receiving basic housing through the Government's housing schemes would be increased.
The President further announced that the Government will amend the existing regulation that imposes a service limitation after a fixed period in a single rank, ensuring soldiers serving with dedication can advance and remain in service. He also assured that every soldier would have the opportunity to serve within an area command covering the locality where their family resides.
At the ceremony, the President conferred medals and plaques, which included the Distinguished Service Medal, the Presidential Medal, and the Long Service Medal, along with awards for soldiers who earned the health and fitness ribbon, the fittest soldier (female and male) for 2025, and the fittest unit.
He also inaugurated the School of Engineering and Logistics, which operates under the MNDF Service Corps. Located in B. Kihaadhoo, the school has been established to enhance the technical skills and academic capabilities of the MNDF.
Upon their arrival, the President and the First Lady were received by the Minister of Defence and National Service, Hassan Rasheed, and his spouse; the Chief of Defence Force, Major General Ibrahim Hilmy, and his spouse; and the Vice Chief of Defence Force, Brigadier General Ahmed Giyas. They were then accorded a Guard of Honour.
Senior MNDF officers, Cabinet Ministers, senior Government officials, and a large number of soldiers attended the ceremony, which also included a special Dua.
The Maldivian military, now known as the MNDF, was officially established on 21 April 1892.
