President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that the Government has no intention of pursuing fresh constitutional amendments beyond those required to fulfil key pledges. He made the remarks at a press briefing held at the President’s Office today.
The President confirmed that the Government will continue implementing the reform agenda announced ahead of the local council elections and the referendum. This includes efforts to reduce the number of Members of Parliament in proportion to population growth, introduce quotas for women and youth, and safeguard the independence of the judiciary.
He further stated that, as part of the reform agenda, the Administration has decided to remove the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) from the purview of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). He noted that the amendment to re-establish the Judicial Council, restructure the DJA to make it accountable to the Chief Justice and the Judicial Council, and the requirement for the Chief Judicial Administrator to report to the Judicial Council and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court collectively represent a positive and necessary change.
The President observed that previous legislative amendments had granted the Administrator greater authority than senior magistrate court judges, which had adversely affected the functioning of the judiciary.
He affirmed that reforms to both the judiciary and the People’s Majlis should continue without interruption.
