President Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the Malé Taxi Line, with First Lady Sajidha Mohamed accompanying him at a ceremony held at Hulhumalé Central Park this evening.

Developed under the President’s initiative, the Malé Taxi Line aims to address the taxi shortage in the Malé area and provide a holistic solution. The service will operate 24 hours a day, utilising a fleet of 150 environment-friendly electric vehicles of varying sizes, with smaller vehicles suited to navigating narrow streets and larger vehicles designed to transport passengers and luggage. A dedicated hotline, 1655, has also been introduced for the service.

Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Deputy Commissioner of Police (Retd.) Ahmed Saudee, stated that the Malé Taxi Line represents a transformative shift in the country’s transport system.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen affirmed that existing taxi services would continue to operate alongside the new service without disruption. He added that the service is set to be expanded to Addu City later this year.

Following the inauguration, the President and First Lady inspected the fleet of vehicles introduced under the new taxi service.
