President Dr Mohamed Muizzu presided over the Engineers’ Award 2026 ceremony this evening, an accolade conferred by the Government to recognise engineers who have rendered invaluable service to the nation and continue to set an exemplary benchmark in their profession.
Held at Barceló Nasandhura, the event marks a historic milestone in according national honour and prestige to engineering professionals. The initiative underscores the pivotal role of the construction industry in driving economic growth, whilst paying tribute to the dedication of local engineers and industry stakeholders towards national development and the sector's advancement.
Although the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development opened nominations across ten categories, honours presented during the ceremony included the Sustainability Champion Award, Engineering Innovation, Technology, Education, and Research Award, Young Engineer Award, Student Innovator Award, Community Impact Award, and the Women in Engineering Award. In addition, the awards conferred tonight featured the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Engineer of the Year Award, which were presented to the recipients by the President.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred upon three distinguished figures, with two honoured posthumously: Abdul Shakoor Solih, the late Ahmed Mahureen, and the late Mohamed Rasheed, whilst the Engineer of the Year Award was presented to Dr Furqan Ibrahim.
President Dr Muizzu first announced the Government’s intention to confer a national engineering award during his address on 30 August 2025, commemorating the Maldives’ inaugural National Engineers’ Day. The date was designated as National Engineers’ Day as it marks the anniversary of the opening of the Sinamalé Bridge, the most monumental infrastructure development project in Maldivian history, making it the fitting occasion to celebrate the engineering profession.
