President Mohamed Muizzu has inspected the progress of the Government’s ongoing land reclamation project at Giraavaru Falhu in the Greater Malé Area, as part of efforts to address the housing shortage – one of the most pressing concerns for the current administration.

Upon arrival at the site, the President was received by the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, along with Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, and senior management of the company.

During the visit, the President was briefed on the latest developments and inspected the ongoing reclamation works.

Under the second phase of the project, MACL is set to reclaim a total of 97.15 hectares, of which 35 hectares have already been completed. In the first phase, Maldives Fund Management Corporation Limited (MFMC) reclaimed 70 hectares.

In total, both phases will result in 167.15 hectares of land being reclaimed at Giraavaru Falhu, with 105 hectares completed to date.

The President has been providing regular updates on the project via his official account on X. In a post on 21 March, he stated that reclamation and land plot survey works are expected to be completed by the end of April, with the handover of land plots scheduled to commence in June.

Additionally, the President announced the start of reclamation works on 30 January 2026, followed by an update on 13 February confirming that operations were being carried out simultaneously using two dredgers – the Queen of the Netherlands, with a capacity of 35,000 cubic metres, and Oranje, with a capacity of 22,000 cubic metres.
