President Dr Muizzu has stated that the possession of power is not, in itself, justification for its use, and that any authority held must be exercised with profound responsibility.
The President made these remarks at a press briefing held at the President's Office today.
Responding to a journalist’s question regarding local councils, the President clarified that while the law grants the executive power to take action against them, he does not believe in resorting to such measures unnecessarily. He emphasised that if all parties conduct themselves professionally and set aside partisan interests, the public will face no unnecessary hurdles. He observed, however, that progress is frequently impeded when political agendas take precedence over public welfare — a setback that the public cannot afford.
The President further noted that the pledges he made were always meant to be fully delivered, a goal that can only be achieved with the active cooperation of local councils. He reaffirmed his commitment to working within a decentralised framework, noting that councils are constitutionally part of the executive branch and are legally mandated to support Government policies and national projects. He asserted that as the President is elected by a national majority, those within the executive sphere are duty-bound to cooperate with the Administration.
This is the second press briefing held under an arrangement announced in this year's Presidential Address, whereby the President meets the press every Monday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, except during official travel, public holidays, or unforeseen scheduling conflicts.
