President Dr Mohamed Muizzu attended commencement of land reclamation for Vihafaru airport development in South Miladhunmadulu Atoll, this afternoon.

The project was first announced through a Presidential Decree in 2024. During a tour of the atoll in July 2025, the President assured residents that physical works on project would commence in early 2026.

The President has previously acknowledged the significance of an additional airport in the atoll to serve the areas of Hulhudhoo, Fodhdhoo and Velidhoo, notwithstanding the existing airport at Maafaru. This, he observed, would greatly diversify the economy and tourism potential in the region.

As work commences today in line with the Presidential pledge, over 40 hectares of land, elevated 1.6 metres above sea level, will be reclaimed upon completion.

The project was inaugurated jointly by the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, and the Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited, Ibrahim Shareef.

Following the ceremony, the President and other dignitaries inspected the site.
