President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the notion that local councils are elected to hold the Government accountable is a fundamental misconception. He made the remarks on Thursday evening at the inauguration of the People’s National Congress (PNC) office.

The President underscored that the three branches of the State are constitutionally distinct, reiterating that local councils operate within the executive branch. He cautioned that electing councils with the intention of scrutinising the Government would risk turning island and city governance into politically driven arenas, diverting focus from essential municipal responsibilities and development priorities.

Addressing the upcoming local council elections, President Dr Muizzu emphasised that the effective implementation of the Administration’s planned and budgeted development projects depends on the cooperation of elected representatives at all levels. He noted that actions by certain local councils which obstruct development efforts or delay the resolution of social issues ultimately hinder national progress. He added that the forthcoming elections provide an opportunity for citizens to elect council members free from the constraints of political ideology.

President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed that his Administration remains committed to working closely with the public, prioritising their welfare, and placing national interests above individual or political considerations.

The ceremony was attended by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, Members of Parliament, Cabinet Ministers, senior PNC officials, and members of the public.
