President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has designated the next two years, beginning on 1 January 2026, for the implementation of special measures aimed at advancing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

In a message shared on his official X account, the President stated that, following concerns raised by SME entrepreneurs during a meeting held on 17 December 2025, the Cabinet took several decisions on Wednesday to strengthen the implementation of manifesto commitments relating to SME development, while supporting ongoing Government initiatives.

He further stated that relevant Government authorities will continue to announce details of additional initiatives to be implemented during the designated period.

During the meeting with SME entrepreneurs, the President considered the proposals shared and announced two key decisions: the extension of the demurrage-free period for imported goods from 80 hours to 124 hours, and the transition to 24-hour goods clearance services.

In line with this, the Maldives Customs Service commenced 24-hour goods clearance operations on 25 December 2025.
