President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that while the Government is committed to upholding press freedom in the Maldives, it will allow no room for defamation or slander that undermines an individual’s dignity.
The President made these remarks during a community consultation this evening with residents of Maafannu at Thaajuddeen School, in response to a journalist’s question.
President Dr Muizzu emphasised that such consultative meetings are held to provide the public with a direct platform to share concerns and perspectives with the Administration. He welcomed public opinion, constructive criticism, and differing views, assuring that every citizen is equal in his eyes and that the Government will not discriminate against anyone.
Addressing the Fourth Estate, the President observed that journalism, like all professions, carries significant responsibility. He stressed the importance of impartial reporting to maintain objectivity, noting that when a media outlet openly identifies its editorial policy as anti-government, its reporting reflects political bias, which conflicts with the ethical standards of journalism.
The President affirmed that the Administration will not restrict press freedom or the right to free expression within recognised journalistic frameworks that comply with Islamic principles and the Constitution of the Maldives. He clarified, however, that freedom of expression does not extend to defamation or attacks on an individual’s dignity.
President Dr Muizzu reiterated that every individual has the right to dignity, as prescribed in divine decree, and that his Administration will allow no violation of this fundamental principle. At the same time, he assured that the Government will support and welcome all efforts by the Fourth Estate to report objectively, free from political bias, and grounded in truth.
