President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised that the Maldives cannot overcome the challenges facing its communities and the nation unless every individual acts with honesty and accountability, reiterating his solidarity with the people.
He made these remarks during a consultative community meeting with residents of Maafannu, where members of the public raised questions and concerns on a wide range of issues.
Highlighting key issues facing the Maldives, particularly the drug menace and illegal business operations by expatriates, the President outlined the Government’s ongoing efforts to address these problems within the framework of the law. He referenced recent legislative reforms, including the introduction of capital punishment for major drug traffickers, as well as policies governing the deportation of expatriates conducting businesses outside the legal system.
President Dr Muizzu noted that challenges such as illegal business operations and limited opportunities for Maldivian youth can only be addressed when society acknowledges its own role in sustaining these issues. He stressed that meaningful change requires sincerity, responsibility, and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths. He added that employment opportunities for youth should extend beyond the Government sector to include the private sector, urging communities to assist in creating jobs.
Acknowledging that Maafannu is the most densely populated ward in Malé City, the President reflected on sensitive local issues, noting that housing remains a primary challenge. He detailed the housing projects being undertaken to address the crisis nationwide, including options for residents who previously received one-bedroom apartments but now seek improved housing.
He stressed that the Government will remain honest and accountable in all its endeavours to deliver tangible development and ensure no individual is left behind. He also outlined ongoing infrastructure projects and future plans for Malé City, emphasising efforts to improve public services.
The President also highlighted the importance of the Maldives 2.0 digital transformation initiative, describing it as a major step towards reducing corruption and strengthening governance.
President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed that the Administration remains committed to addressing public concerns, but stressed that national progress ultimately depends on the collective honesty, accountability, and active participation of the Maldivian people.
