President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that national development will remain incomplete unless healthcare is placed at the forefront of national policy.

He made the remarks at the ‘Rayyithunnaa Eku Kuriah – Hafthaa 104’ function held at the Maldives Centre for Social Education (MCSE) to mark the Administration’s second anniversary.

The President reaffirmed that the well-being of the people remains the Administration’s highest priority. In thi regard, he reflected on the Government’s efforts these past two years, guided by a vision of preventive and curative healthcare.

President Dr Muizzu observed that preventive healthcare had not previously been given adequate attention in the Maldives, often compelling citizens to travel abroad for essential treatment. He emphasised that this is not the future the nation envisions, citing key measures implemented over the past two years, including the national vape ban, the introduction of a generational smoking ban, and increases in tobacco prices.

He stated that, alongside prevention-focused policies, the Government is working to expand access to medical treatment domestically. Significant efforts are underway to establish tertiary-level healthcare services across five regions, thereby reducing reliance on Malé. He also highlighted major advancements to the air ambulance service, describing it as one of the most critical services for the public.

President Dr Muizzu recalled that, during his visits to communities, inadequate healthcare services were among the most frequently raised concerns. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring that, by the end of 2026, every inhabited island will have an upgraded, renovated, and fully staffed health centre.

Highlighting that the current Administration has launched the highest number of health-sector infrastructure projects to date, the President assured that substantial progress will also be made in strengthening human resources. He added that the next six months will see significant advancements in the health sector, particularly in diagnostic services.
