President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that unprecedented efforts have been made over the past year to strengthen the capacity of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) in order to safeguard the Maldives’ independence and sovereign boundaries.

Speaking at the ‘Rayyithunnaa Eku Kuriah – Hafthaa 104’ function held at the Maldives Social Education Centre (MCSE) hall to mark the second anniversary of the Administration, the President highlighted the Government’s ongoing initiatives to protect the nation’s independence and sovereignty. In this regard, he noted that the Coast Guard fleet will be doubled, the Marine Corps’ capacity enhanced, and capacity-building for the Air Corps is currently under way.

The President emphasised that empowering the MNDF is one of his key responsibilities. He added that although the Maldives has a small population, the nation should not regard itself as inferior to any other country. Citing the Maldives’ vast maritime territory and rich history, he stressed that the nation’s airspace and seas must be protected around the clock, as expected by all citizens. Addressing questions about why such measures were not implemented previously, he stated that his Administration’s policy is to commence this work without delay.

President Dr Muizzu further explained that enhancing the military is essential to safeguarding the country’s independence. Ensuring continuous, 24-hour surveillance and protection of both the aerial and maritime Exclusive Economic Zone is critical, he added, as it is a key consideration for international investors.

The President also highlighted the Government’s efforts to strengthen the nation’s defence network through diplomatic engagement and enhanced cooperation with other countries.
