President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the Rasmalé reclamation site today to review progress on the Rasmalé Land Reclamation and Coastal Protection Project – the largest single initiative undertaken to address the Maldives’ housing needs from a single location.
The Government is implementing the project in multiple phases to deliver a transformative solution to the national housing challenge. Work across three areas is advancing rapidly, with Site J now fully completed, while 25.53 per cent of Site L and 20.09 per cent of Site C have been completed.
A key pledge of President Dr Muizzu, the Rasmalé Project aims to provide land for housing within the Greater Malé Region. During the official Republic Day ceremony earlier this month, the President announced that 15,000 plots from the reclaimed area would be allocated within approximately five months.
President Dr Muizzu has previously stated that priority in housing allocation will be given to citizens above 18 years of age who do not own any form of housing, ensuring access to family homes. He also noted that reclamation works across the Malé region are progressing swiftly, with further acceleration expected in December. With the deployment of additional dredgers, the President added that the overall pace of reclamation will increase threefold.
Located in K. Fushidhiggaru Lagoon, the project commenced in December 2023 and will see the reclamation of 1,153 hectares to develop Rasmalé as an environmentally sustainable eco-city.
During his visit, President Dr Muizzu was accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and senior Government officials. The project teams briefed the President on the latest progress and ongoing works.
