President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the completion of the K. Gulhi Land Reclamation Project as the foundation for further development initiatives in the island.
He made these remarks while speaking at a ceremony held this evening in the newly reclaimed area to commemorate the completion of the K. Gulhi Land Reclamation and Coastal Protection Project.
Highlighting the significance of the project, President Dr Muizzu commended the dedicated efforts of all those involved in its successful completion. He noted that the ongoing formulation of the Land Use Plan would ensure the most effective and beneficial allocation of land, based on the needs of the community. The President reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting the people of Gulhi, particularly in housing development and other key sectors.
During the ceremony, an agreement was formalised between the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for the development of K. Gulhi Harbour. The President assured that, similar to the reclamation project, the harbour development would be implemented swiftly and efficiently.
Addressing public concerns regarding land allocated for tourism, the President emphasised that a solution would be reached in accordance with the wishes of the residents, within legal frameworks, and without imposing any burden on the state.
President Dr Muizzu reiterated that the development of Gulhi remains a priority for the Government, underscoring his Administration’s commitment to advancing equitable progress across all islands of the Maldives.
The Gulhi Land Reclamation and Coastal Protection Project, undertaken by MTCC, was completed within 630 days, adding 10.15 hectares of land to the island. The project included the construction of a 940-metre revetment, a 362-metre geo bag revetment, and an 88-metre groyne.
Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, presented a commemorative plaque to the Gulhi Island Council to commemorate the occasion.
The harbour development project is scheduled for completion within 530 days and will include enhancing the harbour depth and channel, repairing existing structures, and constructing a new concrete jetty.
