The President has announced that work will commence this year on a modern 30-bed hospital to serve the L. Isdhoo and L. Kalaidhoo communities, as part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare provision in the region.
The announcement was made while addressing residents during the final stop of his tour of Hadhdhunmathi. Addressing a gathering on the Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo main road, the President confirmed that the hospital would be situated in a neutral location to ensure equitable access for both communities. He emphasised that, in the interim period preceding the hospital’s completion, measures would be implemented to bolster healthcare services, including allocations in the 2026 State Budget for the recruitment of additional doctors and medical staff for the islands.
The 2026 State Budget also provides funding for the establishment of a comprehensive sanitation network aimed at addressing longstanding sewerage issues affecting the communities. Work has already commenced on the modernisation of the Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo main road, which, the President stated, will progress concurrently with the sanitation project.
During the visit, construction began on the L. Kalaidhoo–L. Dhan’bidhoo causeway. Underscoring its significance for regional development, the President assured the timely completion of the 1 km causeway.
He also announced that the State Budget further allocates resources for school expansions, the enhancement of sports facilities, and the installation of an additional generator to address electricity supply challenges.
Acknowledging the historical significance of Isdhoo and Kalaidhoo, the President announced the establishment of a dedicated facility to showcase the communities’ heritage, in accordance with the Government’s nationhood policy.
Furthermore, the President inaugurated Bank of Maldives ATM services in Isdhoo and Kalaidhoo, completing ATM coverage across all inhabited islands of the atoll. An agreement was also signed with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for the development of the Kalaidhoo Harbour.
In conclusion, the President reiterated the atoll’s aspiration for an additional airport, affirming his commitment to realise this pledge. He noted that the Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo area presents an ideal location for the project, as construction can proceed without the need for land reclamation.
