President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the fulfilment of his presidential pledge to establish police services on every inhabited island in the Maldives.
Speaking to residents of L. Gan during his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands of Hadhdhunmathi, the President confirmed that police services have now been extended to all populated islands across the nation. The milestone was marked by the commencement of police services in R. Rasgetheemu at 5:15 p.m. this evening.
President Dr Muizzu noted that when he assumed office on 17 November 2023, 66 inhabited islands lacked any form of police services. These communities had relied on neighbouring islands for law enforcement, a situation he described as inadequate to meet basic public safety needs.
At the time, only 17 islands had dedicated police facilities, posing significant challenges in delivering consistent services. The President stated that his Administration is now working to establish police stations on 130 islands by the end of the year, ensuring that each community receives policing from its own dedicated facility.
