President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the allowance for single mothers will be increased, and a new allowance for thalassaemia patients will be introduced starting January 2026.
The President made the announcement while addressing residents of L. Gan during his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands of Hadhdhunmathi.
He stated that MVR 211 million has been allocated in next year’s State budget to raise the allowance for single mothers to MVR 3,000 per child. In addition, MVR 11.7 million has been included in the budget to fund the newly introduced allowance for thalassaemia patients, providing MVR 1,000 per month for each patient.
The introduction of a special allowance for thalassaemia patients is one of the President’s pledges, reflecting his commitment to prioritising areas previously neglected by the government and fostering a more compassionate society. Furthermore, increasing support for single mothers and fathers for their children’s upbringing to a total of MVR 12,000, at a rate of MVR 3,000 per child, is another key measure outlined in his manifesto.
