President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has committed to constructing 300 housing units in L. Gan this year and has assured compensation for individuals who have relocated from other islands to Gan.
The President made this announcement while addressing residents of Gan during his ongoing visit to the inhabited islands of Hadhdhunmathi.
In this context, President Dr Muizzu highlighted the Government’s commitment to expanding housing access, explaining that 100 units will be constructed under the agreement formalised this evening, 100 units are currently under development, and an additional 100 units are scheduled for construction this year, bringing the total to 300 housing units. The President has previously stated that Gan will host one of the largest housing developments in the country.
President Dr Muizzu reiterated his Administration’s commitment to ensuring fair compensation for individuals relocated to Gan from other islands. He noted that the necessary funds have been appropriately allocated to facilitate this initiative. He announced that a total of MVR 8.45 million would be credited to beneficiaries' accounts at a rate of MVR 50,000 per individual, following assessments conducted by delegations from the relevant ministries.
The President also highlighted the Government's strategic initiatives to facilitate resort development within atolls with underdeveloped tourism sectors. He affirmed that, in addition to the tourist resort development agreement for Gasgan’du Finolhu executed this evening, numerous other projects of a similar nature are planned for implementation in various phases.
During this visit, the President is scheduled to formally launch several phases of his presidential pledges on the island. In this regard, the Gan shore protection project was inaugurated today. Plans to improve the island's water and sewage infrastructure, as well as to establish a Rehabilitation Centre, are scheduled to commence on Wednesday.
Furthermore, several key agreements relating to infrastructure and public services were formalised this evening. These include provisions for the modernisation of the island's roadways, the upgrade of Gan Regional Hospital to tertiary-level status, the construction of the island's Sports Complex, and the implementation of a new harbour project on the northern side of the island.
The President also announced that a Public Works Unit will be established on the island soon and that RTL services will be expanded to cover the entire atoll within the next five months.
In his address to the island community, the President affirmed that construction of an Islamic Centre and a school infrastructure project is scheduled to commence, stating that these initiatives will be funded under the 2026 national budget.
