President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that, from 2026, mechanisms will be established to enable healthcare providers and hospitals to communicate directly with ministries and relevant State institutions as autonomous entities. He made the announcement while addressing residents of Maamigili during his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands of South Ariatholhu.
Addressing the meeting held at the Maamigili harbour area, the President stated that establishing direct communication channels would reduce bureaucratic layers in the workplace, enhancing efficiency and improving overall workflow.
He added that the initiative would also eliminate the need for healthcare providers to rely on regional or atoll hospitals as intermediaries for procuring medicines, streamline staff approvals, and facilitate the delivery of other essential healthcare services.
The President assured that all technical and human resources necessary to implement the new system would be in place by the end of the year.
Another significant issue raised during the meeting concerned one of the most frequently requested initiatives from residents during the President’s visits - the allocation of picnic islands. President Dr Muizzu confirmed that a designated picnic island will be assigned to each atoll, which, in accordance with established regulations, may be utilised by local communities and for tourism purposes. He further noted that a corresponding Cabinet paper is being drafted for consideration.
