President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that population consolidation will only be undertaken following full consultation with the residents concerned.

He made this statement during a consultative meeting with community leaders and residents of M. Raiymandhoo, held at Raiymandhoo School. The President engaged directly with the community to discuss the island’s development prospects and address concerns about daily livelihoods.

During the meeting, residents expressed differing views on the island’s future. While some supported relocation, others preferred to remain in Raiymandhoo. In response, President Dr Muizzu stressed that population and development consolidation is a cost-effective policy that strengthens communities. However, he emphasised that such initiatives would only proceed with the full consent of residents and after careful consideration of all relevant factors.

The President further clarified that, under the Government’s population consolidation policy, relocation would only be considered if at least 80 per cent of an island’s population supports the decision. He assured residents that, should Raiymandhoo opt for relocation, the Government would implement a housing project on the host island to accommodate them.

At today’s meeting, President Dr Muizzu gave due consideration to the perspectives of residents both those in favour of relocation and those wishing to remain in Raiymandhoo.
