President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that, from 1 January 2026, councils across all cities and islands will be charged domestic electricity rates for power used to light roads and public areas. The decision applies to electricity supplied by Fenaka Corporation and the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO).
The President made the announcement today on his official X account.
In his post, the President stated that the decision was taken to further strengthen the decentralised system, noting that the change would enable councils to allocate more funds towards other municipal services on the islands.
This follows his earlier announcement on 5 September 2025 to double the budget allocation for Women’s Development Committees (WDCs) and to revise the fiscal policy for block grants provided to councils.
