President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the development of a domestic airport in Vihafaru, South Miladhunmadulu Atoll, will begin early next year. He made the announcement during a meeting with residents of N. Holhudhoo, as part of his ongoing tour of the atoll.
The President noted that while the airport in Maafaru currently serves the atoll, an additional airport would greatly benefit the islands of Holhudhoo, Velidhoo, and Fodhdhoo, particularly as the region continues to expand its tourism sector and prepares for major economic diversification projects.
Highlighting the Government’s ongoing development efforts in Holhudhoo, President Dr Muizzu revealed that work to complete the essential infrastructure required to operationalise Holhudhoo’s designated extension, Holhumeedhoo, will also commence next year. He added that plans are underway to construct an Islamic Centre on the island under the new policy initiatives.
The President further stated that several key projects are scheduled to be included in the next round of contracts to be signed in September. These include improvements to harbour access, land reclamation, expansion of the health centre, and the construction of futsal and handball courts.
As part of Holhudhoo’s road development plan, the second phase will include the construction of a ring road. The President also assured that the island’s water system project will be completed within the next two months.
During the meeting, an agreement was signed between the Ministry of Education and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for the construction of a new building for Meyna School, one of the oldest schools in the country.
