President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that coastal protection works and the western jetty project in Maalhendhoo will commence in August. He made the announcement while addressing residents of Maalhendhoo during his tour of the inhabited islands of South Miladhunmadulu Atoll.
Highlighting that maritime access to and from the island has long been a major concern for the community, the President confirmed that the design of the jetty has been finalised, with only the final stages of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) pending. He assured residents that the project would be implemented in full.
Addressing the island’s land shortage, the President noted that finding a solution is both a long-standing aspiration of the community and a presidential pledge. Emphasising the critical need for land to support housing, economic activity, and other essential purposes, the President assured that the planned land reclamation project would be carried out in a way that preserves the island’s natural beauty. He added that, following the necessary consultations, the project would be included in the 2026 State Budget.
The President also stated that, although a decision has been made to bring the island of Tholhendhu under the administrative boundary of Maalhendhoo, the process has been delayed due to ongoing court proceedings. He noted that he has instructed the Attorney General to determine an appropriate way forward in accordance with judicial procedures.
He further emphasised that, alongside enhanced laboratory services and road development, the Government will accord high priority to the comprehensive development needs of the island.
Earlier today, the President attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Fitness and Recreation Centre on the island.
