President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the launch of a nationwide housing initiative set to commence this year, aimed at providing every Maldivian citizen aged 18 and over with their "first home," whether a house or flat.
Addressing the housing crisis in Malé and the islands during an interview with Public Service Media (PSM), the President reaffirmed that ensuring access to affordable housing remains one of his Administration's top priorities. He confirmed that construction in the Greater Malé Region will commence within the year, with plans already underway in key locations such as Giraavaru Falhu and Gulhifalhu.
President Dr Muizzu described housing and home ownership as among the most urgent challenges facing Maldivians today. He emphasised that the Government is committed to developing a long-term, sustainable solution. As part of this effort, 4,000 flats have been allocated for the Malé area alone, which he noted would significantly ease the persistent housing shortage and provide much-needed relief to Maldivian residents.
A central pillar of the initiative is the President's pledge to guarantee a "first home" to all eligible citizens aged 18 and above, particularly those living in Malé. In line with this commitment, the Government aims to begin construction and initiate the allocation process this year. Applicants who qualify are expected to receive written confirmation of their housing allocation by the end of 2025.
Beyond the capital, the President revealed that similar housing projects would be implemented across 57 islands, funded either through contractor financing or the state budget.
Responding to concerns about past injustices in the allocation of social housing, President Dr Muizzu assured that those who lost homes under previous schemes would be given priority in the current programme. The only exception, he clarified, would be for individuals who have already received housing through a different scheme.
The President concluded by reaffirming his Administration's commitment to honouring pledges and improving the overall living conditions of Maldivians, providing reassurance that the Government would continue working diligently to ensure that every citizen has a place to call home.
