In his address at the ceremony commemorating the 133rd anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), President Dr Mohamed Muizzu underscored the significance of national pride, military readiness, and commitment to ensuring the nation's sovereignty. The ceremony took place at the MNDF Kalhuthuh'kalaa Koshi, where the President emphasised the importance of patriotism in strengthening the country's defence capabilities.
During his speech, the President called on every Maldivian to take pride in the armed forces' achievements and support ongoing efforts to enhance their operational capacity. He asserted that the safety and security of the Maldives rest on the dedication to raising standards within the military, providing necessary resources, and ensuring rigorous training protocols for service members. The President highlighted that a collective effort towards national defence must be fuelled by genuine love for the country and a commitment to preserving freedom for future generations.
The President was clear in his stance against those who may undermine military progress, stating that such individuals lack patriotism and are self-serving. He stressed that it is the responsibility of every citizen to reject negativity towards national defence and instead foster a spirit of solidarity and support for the military. In doing so, he urged Maldivians to embrace a national identity deeply rooted in love for their homeland.
Reflecting on his assumption of office on November 17, 2023, the President reiterated that safeguarding the nation's independence and sovereignty is his foremost duty. He recognised the armed forces as essential partners in this endeavour, pledging Government support for economic and military independence. He reminded attendees that although the Maldives has a relatively small population, its vast territorial waters—encompassing 99 per cent of the country—are equally vital to its national integrity.
The President addressed the pressing need for comprehensive security measures, particularly concerning the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). He firmly stated that protecting this expansive area is paramount, and the Government's recent efforts mark just the beginning of a larger commitment to this cause. He articulated a vision for the future, stating that his administration seeks to strengthen the Air Force, Navy, and Army to ensure the Maldives can effectively defend its territory.
In line with these initiatives, the President announced plans to open applications for the National Service soon, reinforcing a holistic approach to military enhancement. He took the opportunity to unveil a new ribbon introduced by the MNDF to honour health and fitness within the forces, celebrating the dedication of personnel to maintaining the highest standards of readiness.
Awards were also presented at the ceremony. The President acknowledged the fittest soldiers of the previous year and recognised units that demonstrated exceptional performance, including the successful unit at the esteemed Pakistan Army Team Spirit (PATS).
As a symbolic gesture of commitment, the President handed over rifles to new soldiers who had just graduated from basic training, reinforcing the continuous cycle of service and dedication within the MNDF.
