President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that the water and sewerage network in An’golhitheemu will be solved. He gave this assurance while meeting with the residents of the island.

In his speech, the President said that the contractor tasked on the project has already undertaken similar work in other islands of the atoll, pledging to expedite and resolve the water and sewerage issues in the atoll.

He added that he had a ministerial delegation accompanying him on these trips, to ensure that developmental projects can go ahead at an accelerated pace. This, he said, allowed councils and other institutions to have face-to-face meetings with Ministers, communicate and resolve issues, and enact prompt solutions. Existing government systems, he added, were prone to bureaucratic norms and hurdles; a feature common not just to Maldives, but to all nations. However, these trips, the President added, would ensure project acceleration.

Noting that the harbour expansion of the island has languished so far, the President vowed to carry out the project, as well as jetty and beach area project. Furthermore, he noted that health and education are neglected sectors in every island, stress that these two sectors will be given high priority in this year's budget. He assured that he would provide the necessary facilities for the school and the development of the health centre.

In his address, the President shared his vision for the development of the health sector. He said that arrangements will be made to ensure that the equipment in the health centers is available without running out of reagents or other resources. By using existing bulk procurement facilities, equipment and resources would be sought, he said, similar to how medicines were sourced.

The President pledged to commence road construction project in the island as soon as water and sewerage projects are completed.

He added that health and wellbeing of citizens was a primary priority for the Administration. As such, sporting initiatives for youth and women have taken precedence in this year’s budget. He pledged to create a handball court for the residents of the island and pledged to expedite the stalled Visitor’s Centre project.

In Tuesday’s ceremony, Bank of Maldives tasked the creation of an ATM in the island to the Council.
